A Sticky Web... And Yes, Gravity Works!

I found yet another wonderful idea in the book Do It Yourself Early Learning. While the children we playing, I took a role of masking tape and I started to make a web with it. (The book recommends a doorway, but I wanted to make something bigger, so I chose a large area near our entry.)

"Ms. Amy, what are you doing?"

"I'm building a web."

"Can I touch it?"

"Yes, you can."

"It's sticky"

"Yes, it is sticky. Do you think that you could find some things to stick to it?"

"Like bugs?"

"Sure, like bugs. What do you think you could find that would be kind of like bugs??"

We tried a lot of different toys and things we found in our toy room. Some of them stayed "stuck in the web," and some of them fell to the floor.

Some of us played for quite some time, adding new toys and trying some of the same ones again and again......

Eventually, the web was so filled with toys that it could no longer support the weight, and some of the pieces of the web fell to the floor.

Proving once again.. "Gravity Works!"

(on a side note, as I was uploading photos I noticed that Almost Unschoolers tried a web too! Their creation was slightly different and involved using cotton balls. I think we will be trying that soon!)

I like the size of this one. My kids wanted to stick random toys to their web, too - but I managed to hold them off just long enough to get out the cotton balls :)

Our DIY Light Tables

There has been a lot of buzz about light tables over at Teach Preschool on Facebook . Deborah has collected some great ideas for light table play and has been experimenting with making her own table over on the Teach Preschool blog. I thought I would share with you our two light tables and how we made them. This first table is one that we put together with some scrap wood pieces, an old plexi-glass door from an entertainment center, and a couple of aquarium lights. Total Cost = $0. (We had everything on hand.) The table needs a little bit of tweaking. (It is on my to do list). Basically, we made a frame of wood around the plexi-glass and placed the lights under it. Our DIY skills in putting this together were far from expert, so the frame has a couple of gaps (and the reused wood is warped). We plan to try a new frame and use some caulk to seal any gaps. A Few Ideas With Marker Caps (As Promised)

Yesterday, I hope I convinced you not to throw away your markers that "don't work." Today, I will share with you a few ideas for what to do with all of the caps. Yes, WE CLIMB UP THE SLIDE!

Yes, we do climb up the slide. We climb up the slide here at Child Central Station in the backyard... We climb up the slides when we are at the park..... and here are a few reasons why we think you could reconsider climbing up and allowing the children in your care to climb up the slide too! 1. Climbing up the Slide uses MUSCLE! Young children need to be active and climbing up the slide requires a lot of muscle and coordination.
